This week we were creating tones using only white. This restriction made me hone in on the effect the background has on the layers on top, considering how many coats of white were needed to create the lighter tones. If I had painted the background fuller I think this would’ve helped and changed the tone of the object I was painting.

The next paintings colour mixing was allowed, so I was able to mix some lovely blue-grey tones. I quickly learned that the colour white isn’t actually white, its many versions of grey when it interacts with the light. By covering the background more with white and grey shadows I found it really changed the colours, making them interact better with the background. The colours change in our eyes depending on what they’re next to/ interacting with.

I mixed some nice grey tones with the use of blue and red, and as my final painting, I took the skills from my session and applied them.
